Thoughts from the Judaica Store - Enjoying the moment
We just finished the Jewish holiday of Passover. In case you don't know
any old-fashioned types like me, who do it the way Bubby did it, I'll
tell you what it entails. Weeks prior to the festival we make lists;
shop; clean; scour; and rack our brains to think through the following:
1.
Where ELSE could my 3 year old have hidden his cookies? and
2.
What's the easiest way to get them out from behind the radiator?
(What
am I talking about? The holiday of Passover requires that for seven
days, we don't eat, or even own, leavened items. The only grain-product
allowed is matzah).
When we finally arrive at the night of
Passover itself, to perform the "seder" (meal and telling of the story
of the Jews leaving Egypt), the weeks of preparation create an
excitement, and a feeling of "wow, we're really here," that is hard to
describe. Especially for children!
Passover lasts for a full
week. During that time the kids don't go to school. I'm the type of
Mommy who enjoys these relaxed mornings -- no lunches to prepare, no
notebooks to sign -- and I'll admit it, I try to be the last one to roll
out of bed.
So here's where enjoying the moment comes in --
there are few pleasures I enjoy more than lying in bed, eyes closed,
listening to a nine-year-old boy play with a one-and-a-half year old
girl. How can two people who are so different -- he's 6 TIMES her age!!
-- find so much in common?
But I guess that's the lesson -- if we
care about each other, we can always find common ground, ways to enjoy
our time together, and ways to make each other feel good. I will admit
to you -- when I'm lying in bed listening, I don't think these
philosophical thoughts; though maybe I should start...
